Kim’s 3-a-day Rotation

Kim sent me the following rotation idea and I thought I’d share it with you as well as address her questions should you have the same ones:

Hey Steph!
I thought I would be really ambitious and do 3 a day for a week using a cardio, a sculpt, and a core each day.
How does this look: (PFH is Harmony, PF is Original, PFP is Plus)
Mon- PFH 1,2,3
Tues- PFH 4,5,6
Wed- PFH 7,8,10
Thurs PF 1,2,5
Fri- PFP Cardio, Total, Can’t decide which Core- Which is most intense ab workout?
What order should I do them? Cardio, Sculpt, then Core? Does it matter? Thanks!

Kim – thanks for putting this together!  This is a great way to truly get in some serious muscle confusion in the course of 5 days.  In terms of your question about which ab workout is most intense, they each have a separate training goal so it’s hard to make a specific call on that..so maybe you could rotate which one you do.

The question about which order to do them in is an excellent one and this once again offers more options for muscle confusion and training challenges.  You may want to change up the order so that one day you lead with cardio, then the next you lead off with sculpt.   I’d recommend keeping the core workouts either first or last as slowing down right smack dab in the middle might not be as comfortable in terms of slowing down.

Thanks for putting this together Kim and keep us posted on how you’re doing and on the order you decide to follow!

Hope all of you have a great weekend!

God bless!

YOU are who I’m talking about!

Some of you have heard me say I believe you are fearfully and wonderfully made no matter what kind of condition you may be in at this particular point in time.  If you’re a believer, you probably know right away that I’m referring to Psalm 139:14 which was written by David.  The actual verse from the New International Version reads “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”  I couldn’t have said it better myself.  You see, the same God that created the most beautiful sunset or sunrise you’ve ever seen, the same one who divided up oceans from land, the same one who conquered death to set us free for eternity over 2000 years ago – is the same one who created you.  Think on that for just a moment.  Take in a few breaths.  Settle in on the fact that the creator of the universe knew that the world needed you and so he made you to be wherever you are, right here, right now.

I get many emails from women who are just looking for a way to get started and the best way to begin whether you have 100, 200, or just 5 pounds to lose –  is to fully acknowledge that YOU are a miracle…  You have to get that in your head and let it reside in your heart.  I love how Warren Wiersbe states it in The Weirsbe Bible Commentary, “We live in and with our bodies all our lives, and we know how amazing they are.  God formed us as He wants us to be, and we must accept His will no matter how we feel about our genetic structure, our looks, or our abilities.”  What a great way to say that all of us truly are amazing and that God made each of us a body as he wills.  Granted, sometimes I wish he would have given me the metabolism of a hummingbird and hair that more accurately reflects my chosen shade from a bottle, but I must whole-heartedly recognize that God had a specific blueprint in mind when he brought me to the earth almost 38 years ago.

What about you?  Can you praise God for your physical existence?  If you haven’t been taking care of yourself, it might be a struggle at first.  But what a great way to honor your creator by using the power of praise to start focusing on what you can do to be a good steward of what he’s given to you specifically.  In fact, if you’ll spend less time tearing yourself down when it comes to healthy living and more time offering praise up to God for what you’ve been blessed with, I think you’ll find that it’s easier to live a healthy life!

Over the next week I want you to make a point at least once a day to stop and thank God for something having to do with your body.  Maybe it’s the strength you possess to tote around 3 kids and groceries…maybe it’s your eyes as you identify someone who needs a hand (like the mom with 3 kids and groceries! ), maybe it’s your ears as you hear the sound of your husband coming through the door…maybe it’s your ability to reach out and touch someone who is just struggling to take a breath and you gently let them know that you’re there for them until they take the last one on this earth…

I love the way the King James Version states Psalm 139:14:

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”

You, my friend… are marvelous.

                         Live like it!

God Bless!

20 Minute Interval Walk

I’ve heard from many of you who enjoy the cardio benefits of walking, so I wanted to share some interval training ideas that you may want to try.   Of course, there’s nothing wrong with going for a walk at a steady pace, but by mixing up your speed you can actually get more out of the time you’re investing in exercise.  I’ll begin with a 20 minute walk which fits nicely with many of the rotations I’ve put up on the site as a substitute for a cardio video.  As always, clear any physical training with your physician and listen to your body!

Happy Trails! (or sidewalks depending on your location…)

20 Minute Cardio Walk

3 minutes – A comfortable pace for warming up

2 minutes – speed things up just a bit

1 minute – walk as fast as you can, arms pumping

3 minutes – return to a comfortable, moderate pace

1 minute – walk as fast as you can, arms pumping (try to move even faster this time)

3 minutes – return to a comfortable, moderate pace

1 minute – walk as fast as you can, arms pumping   (even faster!!  and really try to lean in propelling your body forward!)

3 minutes – return to a comfortable, moderate pace

1 minute – walk as fast as you can, arms pumping (last chance!!!!  MOVE IT!!!!)

2 minutes – comfortable pace to wind things down

Walking Rotation with PFHarmony and PowerFit

I’d like to thank Carmen for the great idea of a rotation that simply uses the sculpting and core routines offered through PowerFit HARMONY and original PowerFit while incorporating walking for the cardio component!  Just like the other rotations you’ve seen, these workouts are presented in an order to allow you work through your major muscle groups while still getting plenty of rest and recovery time.  I’ve written in “walk” below, but feel free to substitute any cardio activity that will keep you moving for at least 20 minutes.

Thanks again Carmen!  Excellent idea :-)

God bless!

Make Yourself at Home!

I want to extend a special welcome to those of you who are new to this site and make sure  from the very start you feel right at home!  I’m going to do a quick review of what you’ll find here on the site, share a little bit about my thoughts as a trainer and hopefully answer some questions you may have.  (And of course, thanks to those of you who have been following me for a while for your support, encouragement and questions!)

First of all, in order to find past posts on various topics, simply look at the listing of categories on the sidebar and click on the one you’d like to see.  Posts are generally in chronological order with the most recent at the top of whatever category you happen to be going through.  If you post a comment on a post – even one that’s been up for a while – I’ll receive a notification and respond to you.  So if you have a question about something you read, simple ask me what you need to know and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible!   If you’d like weekly fitness tips or random healthy ideas that I think of, be sure to join the fan page on Facebook which you can go to by clicking on the Facebook link under Blogroll on the right side of the site.

I’ve been asked what my training philosophy is when it comes to fitness and it’s pretty basic – find something that works for you and don’t be afraid to change things up!  And let me go ahead and add here that nutrition is just as important as the exercise you do, if not more – so educate yourself about nutrition to be sure you make the best choices! Over the years I’ve been blessed to work with many, many women who have taught me more than I could have ever taught them about weight loss.  Some liked to be pushed to the very edge (some over it!) while others I’ve had to drag through every single rep… Some would work out with me for hours while others would just prefer I not show up at all… I’ve used tall steps, short steps, medicine balls, body balls, dumbells, and of course bands… I’ve been super fit and I’ve also been super heavy… And I look at fitness as a journey -  one that is ever-evolving to keep me from getting bored while still keeping me healthy.  That’s why I’m not afraid to try new things, revisit old ones or learn from others and I’ll keep you posted periodically on what I’m up to!

Another critical part of my training philosophy lies within my beliefs concerning why we’re all here and what the whole point of living happens to be.  In fact, if you don’t even know why you’re here, why would you even care to live healthy?  I believe that we were created to honor God – to bring him glory - by carrying out his unique purpose for each of us and that part of our responsibility is to take care of the physical existense we’ve been blessed with.  God could have made us any which way he wanted and these bodies are what we’ve got – so we’re devinely designed!  And to truly experience the joy that I believe we are intended to experience we not only have to accept the amazing grace offered through Christ, but we also have to nurture our physical bodies which carry us through this earthly life.

Please let me know how I can help you in your own fitness journey and hope you’re having a wonderful day!

God bless!
